BBC1 has recommissioned revived period drama Upstairs Downstairs, doubling the run to six episodes.
Controller Danny Cohen has ordered a 6 × 60-minute series, which will continue to follow the fortunes of the Holland family as they face social and political upheaval in the late 1930s.
Though cast and production details are still to be confirmed, the BBC said the new series would include “a shocking twist that will turn the world of Upstairs Downstairs as we know it on its head”. Cohen said: “The return of Upstairs Downstairs was well received but what drove us to recommission were the imaginative and distinctive plans the team has to take the drama forward.”
The first run of the revised classic was stripped over three episodes, starting on Boxing Day. It debuted with 7.5 million (28.54%) and peaked with 8.9 million (30%), according to consolidated Barb data.
The revival saw Jean Marsh reprise her role as Rose Buck, but as housekeeper rather than parlour maid. Set in 1936, storylines revolved around the emergence of British fascism and the abdication of King Edward VIII.
Although no date has been set, the second run is scheduled for 2012, meaning it will once again run after ITV1’s Downton Abbey, a second series of which is due to TX this autumn. The Julian Fellowes-penned drama, set shortly before the First World War, opened its seven-part run with 7.68 million (30%) and closed with 10.8 million (36%).

Day 10 - Your Favourite Cast Member: Keeley Hawes
This meme has got some very easy questions, hasn’t it? I do love everyone on the cast but this is a no-brainer, yes. I’d never seen Keeley in anything before I started watching Ashes to Ashes. I’d heard underthebluesky, in between her “WATCH THE SHOW, WOMAN!” orders, say blah blah blah she’s gorgeous, blah blah blah she’s got a perfect body. But I didn’t pay much attention especially since pictures didn’t impress me. Clearly, I was looking at the wrong pictures.
Before we get to that though, let’s talk about how fucking amazing this woman is as an actress. Because, people, she is. My first reaction watching the show was “Damn, that girl is good!”
I figured that out from episode 1 alone, no idea why others seem to be slower?I don’t know how she does it. I have no clue how she can make me cry and laugh just like that. She’s the puppet-master of my heart, truly. Might be the Eyebrows of Woe. Might be the way her face shows you every single emotion Alex / any other character is going through. I love her delivery (she is so hilarious! She needs to do more comedy. Nao pls.) but even more than that I love what she does when she’s got no dialogue, the way it’s still perfectly clear what the character is thinking. Another thing I also love: her Angry Chin. Heee! :DD (Seriously. When Alex is angry, you can tell by her chin. It’s adorbs!) I saw her in a million things (pretty much everything except maybe 3 things I couldn’t find?) in the break after Series 2 and she was consistently and absolutely fabulous (heh) in all of them. And it’s amazing how she never plays the same character twice. She’s got a massively impressive range and all her characters feel so unique and real. To recap: she’s a fucking phenomenal actress, get used to it.Now, her face. HER FACE. I have no idea how that happened but it has and now we all have to live knowing we will never have a face as gorgeous as that. It would be a cruel thing if looking at it didn’t make up for it times a million. But it does. First off, green eyes. YES. YES. Very green eyes. Second of all, have you ever looked at her mouth? JESUS CHRIST, I need to stop this now. It might become inappropriate. I remember describing her in the early days of my obsession (oh innocent days of one year ago) as a cross between Keira Knightley and Emily Blunt. Maybe. Possibly. I can’t see the similarities anymore because my brain is just a great big jumble of Keeley, Keeley, Keeley. She looks like no one but herself. ♥ (When it becomes too obvious that I am head over heels in love with a celebrity please stop me, mmkay?) Now. Legs. I’m sure you’ve noticed her legs. Also, boobs. Also, EVERYTHING ABOUT HER, JFC.
Bonuses! I’m not going to reveal the true depths of my craziness here and now (yes, there is indeed more!) but I would like to point out a few things: 1) Dolphin tattoo: This is a grown woman. With a jumping dolphin tattooed on her left ankle. YES. I DARE YOU TO BE MORE ADORABLE, KEELEY, I AM POSITIVE THAT YOU CAN’T. 2) Her name: Keeley. Hawes. Keeley Hawes. It is the cutest name ever. (Shut up, I’m foreign.) As ohvienna once wisely said, it is a great name because “you are physically forced to smile twice when you say it.” (This is why I love fangirls. We understand each other.) Clare Julia is a good name too! But I am glad she changed it (for whatever reason.) Keeley ♥♥! 3) Her twitter: Very, very, very sadly (let’s all take a moment to mourn,) her twitter has been deleted due to people being idiots but in the short time that she had one, it was the most happy-making thing in existence: Bublé fangirling? CHECK. Twitpics from knitting club? CHECK. Tweets (TWEETS) about her daughter’s school play in which she was dressed as a bumblebee and playing the maracas? CHECK. Tweets about how the ballet was “totally beautiful”? CHECK. Overall cuteness and amazingness? FUCK YEAH YOU BET THAT’S A CHECK. 4.) She’s got an amazing husband (Hmmm. It’s not inappropriate to perv over Matthew in my Keeley!love post, is it? Oh well.) and three kids which, to be fair, has got to help with the awesomeness! ;)
Now, before I come undone in a pile of Keeley squee, I’ll stop. If you didn’t want to read the whole thing, it is understandable and I’ll sum it up for you: I think Keeley Hawes is pretty much amazing, I just got a bit teel;deer about it.
Happy birthday to
my QueenKeeley Hawes. I am incredibly glad I decided to join the crazy and watch Ashes to Ashes. Stay gorgeous, and funny, and sweet and talented. And, of course, inspiring to a lot of people. That includes me.
